About AKEY *

Akey is a highly sought-after keyboardist, producer and music director from so-called Australia, known for their versatility and dynamic performances with a diverse range of Australian and international artists. Their musical output is ARIA nominated and APRA award-winning. Akey identifies as trans non-binary and queer, contributing to broader conversations about diversity and representation in the music industry.

As a keyboardist, Akey has collaborated with music industry heavyweights such as ARIA Music Award winners Kaiit and Gabriella Cilmi, ARIA Music Award nominee Miss Kaninna, platinum-selling artist Ricki-Lee and (self-proclaimed femme fatale) Ashnikko, Sauti Sol member Chimano, The Voice Australia 2020 winner Chris Sebastian, gold-selling artist Wafia, deep house pioneer Atjazz, R&B royalty Vivian Sessoms (whose credits include Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Cher, P!NK), Archie Roach Foundation Award winner Kee’ahn, and South Sudan's “King of Music”, Gordon Koang.

Akey has supported an impressive lineup of international music icons, including Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Nile Rodgers, Thundercat, Cory Henry, Sampa The Great, Masego, Hiatus Kaiyote, Joy Crookes, Glass Beams, Marcus Miller, Yussef Dayes and Snoh Aalegra. They are set to support Olivia Dean on her sold-out arena tour at the end of 2026.

Originally from the regional town of Wonthaggi, Akey’s career has taken them around the globe, from performing in stadiums to audiences of over 30,000 to appearances on triple j’s Like A Version, ABC's Spicks and Specks and Channel 10’s Studio 10.

Akey holds a Bachelor of Music with a specialisation in Jazz Performance from Monash University and completed a jazz and improvisation summer course at New York University in 2018.

Akey’s original music project, stylised as AKEY, goes full-unapologetic-power-mode, presenting a nujazz cyclone with club weight and harmonic complexity, tearing open the silence around trans and non-binary lives. The razor-tight, expressive ensemble includes Akey on keys, Stephen Lane on bass and Jordan Pereira on drums.

Their first album to define their nujazz sound, Doom, was released in June 2023, with a follow-up released in 2024 under Amsterdam's Wicked Wax label. This release, titled Yoofee/Graze, was a response to their experience with gender visibility and acceptance; a reflection of their desire to break free from restrictive norms and express a spectrum of identity through their art. In 2025, Akey released Astro Shooter, pairing their genre-smashing musicianship with lyrics that insist on visibility. Lines such as "The world forgets our eyes / It shadows those in-between" and the chorus that exhales "Our truth keeps moving on" made the track both a meditation on erasure and a renewed insistence on collective care.

Their innovative work with this ensemble has garnered multiple grants from Creative Victoria, Regional Arts Victoria and The Piano Project. Akey was also selected as a Performance Fellow for the 2021 Dots + Loops program.

Astro Shooter: Live at Bakehouse

AKEY performs ‘Astro Shooter’ live — a future-jazz love song rooted in community, care, and radical presence.

A queer, non-binary force in Australia’s nu-jazz scene, Akey blends lush synths, elastic groove, and harmonic depth into a performance that’s both intimate and expansive. Written in response to growing erasure of trans and non-binary lives, Astro Shooter is a meditation on being seen - and on holding space for one another when the world feels unsteady.

Recorded live at Bakehouse Studios, this version features an expressive ensemble and a keys solo that turns reflection into resolve. Music as witness. Music as belonging.

fk me & (only then) call me a f**

AKEY, the queer, non-binary powerhouse of Australia's nu-jazz vanguard, goes full-unapologetic-power-mode as they release a song with their most iconic title to date. ‘fk me & (only then) call me a f**’ tenderly explores how language can be weaponised to enforce gender norms, how "just a joke" becomes a mechanism of control, and how hazy smiles can become acts of self-preservation.

A sonic statement that fuses future-sonic jazz, lush synth textures and electronic music elements, ‘fk me & (only then) call me a f**’ was composed, recorded and produced by AKEY at Candy Suite Studios and Loose Llama Studios. The single features a razor-tight, expressive ensemble including Ebunoluwa Daramola on drums, Priscilla Stanley on vocals and Robyn Cummins on percussion. Mixed and mastered by GRAMMY-nominated engineer Nick Herrera, ‘fk me & (only then) call me a f**’ melds deeply personal lyricism with their boundary-pushing nu-jazz aesthetic, questioning ownership, intimacy and power: who gets to define another person's identity, and at what cost?

Listen to 'Astro Shooter'

Astro Shooter, ft. Priscilla Stanley

AKEY’s Astro Shooter is a future-jazz statement on non-binary visibility, blending lush synths, club energy and virtuosic keys. Framed as an intimate love song, it captures the safety of being held and seen amid rising anti-trans backlash. Written, produced and performed with a dynamic ensemble, the track transforms erasure into presence. Both protest and refuge, Astro Shooter insists on recognition, holding space for those written out while imagining belonging, care and survival through sound collective.

Listen to 'Yoofee'

Yoofee

AKEY’s Yoofee is a high-voltage nu-jazz tribute to Berlin’s Moses Yoofee Trio, fusing raw spontaneity with intricate precision. Released via Wicked Wax, the track surges with virtuosic keys, elastic bass, sharp drums and soaring flute. Beneath its energy lies a personal statement on non-binary visibility, shaped by experiences of constraint and self-expression. Yoofee transforms resistance into motion, celebrating identity, freedom and the power of sound to break open rigid expectations, reimagining what jazz can become.

Listen to 'Doom'

Doom

Doom sees AKEY channel European travels into a raw, high-energy fusion of nu-jazz, dark house and breakbeat-driven forms. Featuring a cast of leading Australian improvisers, the album pulses with hip-slung syncopation, textural depth and fearless genre-blurring. From jungle to drum and bass, each track pushes movement and mood in new directions. Praised for its virtuosity and collective fire, Doom captures AKEY at full force: exploratory, rhythmically charged, and impossible to confine within boundaries or expectations.

Through Attaboi, Akey interviewed notable artists including Danielle Ponder, Gretta Ray and DRMNGNOW.

In 2021, Akey wrote an article titled ‘What Is Australian Jazz’ for Dingo Australian Jazz Journal, featuring interviews with jazz figures Tony Gould, Deline Briscoe, and Daniel Wilfred. Their subsequent article, ‘The Relevance of Tertiary Jazz Education’, was published in Dingo’s Edition 3 and included insights from Monash University and Jazz Music Institute. Both magazines were available at news agencies across Australia.
